about

It's always 4am sometimes. And it's always 4am when these thoughts lay in for a visit. Dark thoughts that stir you out of sleep, make you squirm, perhaps draw a line of cold sweat on your forehead. What may be filtered out the rest of the day comes roaring in when you let your guard down for that brief bit of rest. The tidal wave of reality comes sweeping in: the whole damn state of the world, threats cosmic and earthly, evil real and imagined, love pondered, (did I mention money?) It's a deep blue time. But deep blue times have their rewards too. Music thrives on that 4am feeling. It's just a quick flip from that edge-of-cliff feeling to sprouting wings and soaring on sounds imagined, as-yet-unheard, unplayed by fingers, unsung. When we're lucky, we can revive those sounds in the light of day, make them manifest in the real word, maybe pluck or beat or sing them until they form a song.

Geek stuff: I wanted to strip the Terraplane down for this record to a trio plus Tracie's singing. Drums, or should I say "drum" was a pitiful 16" street rescue found thirty years ago. I took it home, cleaned it up and was pleased to find that it just happened to sound great and record well. Mic'd in stereo and played with mallet on the left and brush on the right, it works like a chopped-and-channeled rockabilly bush kit. Starting with a bunch of loops and sequences that I recorded and jungle-ized, Don then overdubbed on selected tracks. On New Steel and Ain't Got No, Don and Dave recorded "live" together, old-school. Kai and Lila make an appearance on percussion as well on "Sunset To Sunrise". Guitars were chosen to provide unusual sounds: an old Kay Swingmaster, a Franken-Tele, my mutant Teisco-Godin, lap and pedal steel, SG and Les Paul, and last but certainly not least, some Strat.

about

Elliott Sharp's Terraplane New York, New York

Elliott Sharp’s Terraplane is certainly blues but also something beyond. Begun in 1991, Terraplane has been through many permutations and synthesizes the intersection of country and urban blues with Mississippi fife & drum bands, post-Ayler jazz, Hendrixian guitaristics, the sonic innovations of Sharp's long-running ensemble Carbon and the rhythmic force of the groove, ... more
